If your Tarrytown summer routine last August was a Deep Eddy morning followed by coffee somewhere on Windsor and errands at Casis Village, this August looks different without you having to change the route. Three of the storefronts on that walk have turned over or opened for the first time in the last four months, and the pool itself is running on a schedule it didn't have last year. None of it is dramatic on its own. Taken together, it's the most the five-block core of 78703 has shifted in a single season in a while.
This is a resident's read on what changed, what to do with it, and where the late-summer calendar is worth planning around.
What changed inside the Windsor–Exposition loop
The Windsor Road address that housed the old Tarrytown Cafe has a new tenant. Community Kitchen and Taproom opened in Tarrytown at 3110 Windsor Rd., serving plant-based versions of fried chicken, surf and turf, and barbecue plates alongside classic Southern sides, from co-owners Marlon Rison and Ericka Dotson who first launched the business as Community Vegan, a food truck operating out of a brightly painted 1973 Winnebago on East 11th Street. The brick-and-mortar is designed to feel relaxed, with live plants on wood-block tables, low lighting, and gentle jazz. A useful thing to know if you're planning around it: current hours are Wednesdays and Thursdays 4–9 pm, Fridays and Saturdays noon–9 pm, and Sundays 11 am–6 pm, with brunch 11 am–3 pm, and the restaurant is closed Mondays and Tuesdays.
A block away, Bésame, a spot for ice cream, coffee, and other treats, opened a second food truck in Tarrytown with a soft opening in early April. It fills a gap the neighborhood has felt for a year, which is a walkable dessert stop after dinner that isn't a drive to South Congress.
Casis Village has a new anchor as well. National facial bar franchise Face Foundrié opened its Tarrytown location on Aug. 8, with appointments beginning July 8. The address is 2727 Exposition Blvd., Ste. 119. Whatever you think of chain skincare, the more relevant point is that Casis Village keeps trading up its tenant mix. In May 2023, Casis Shopping Center was sold to a partnership between Austin-based Ivy Cos. and 35 South Capital, and the new owners announced plans to renovate the Center's facade, landscaping, and common areas. Three summers into that ownership, the results are showing up as leases.
Deep Eddy runs on a different clock now
If you swim here regularly, you already know the pool is not on the same rhythm it was last year. Two changes matter.
First, the weekly schedule. Beginning April 21, 2026, Deep Eddy Pool is closed every Tuesday for cleaning and maintenance. That's a permanent shift, not a one-off. If your standing swim was a Tuesday morning, it isn't anymore.
Second, the summer had a mid-season interruption. Deep Eddy Pool was closed Monday, June 22 through Friday, June 28, 2026, for repairs to a fill inlet valve that had broken earlier this year and was interfering with filling the pool in time for morning openings. The valve repair is done. The Tuesday closure is not going away.
For the last stretch of August, the practical shape of a week looks like this:

The pool's spring-fed water runs 68 to 70 degrees year-round, which is the number that keeps the late-August calculus in Tarrytown's favor. The air outside the fence can hit triple digits and the water stays where it was in March.
The August calendar worth driving ten minutes for
None of the big summer series wrap up before Labor Day. If you've been meaning to catch one, the runway is shorter than it feels.
Zilker Hillside Theater
The Zilker Summer Musical runs 7/10 through 8/15 at Zilker Hillside Theater, with a free outdoor production of "Singin' in the Rain" performed Thursdays through Sundays beginning around 8:15 p.m. From most of Tarrytown, that's a fifteen-minute drive and a picnic. The last weekend is the second weekend of August.
The Drop-In at the Long Center
98.9 KUTX and The Long Center's free weekly concert series, The Drop-In, runs 5/21 through 8/13 every Thursday on the Long Center lawn, with a lineup mixing Austin artists from country and pop to R&B and acid punk. Two Thursdays left after this weekend.
Paramount Summer Classic Film Series
Longer runway here. The Paramount Summer Classic Film Series runs 5/22 through 9/7 at the Paramount Theatre and other venues, with new films announced each month. If you keep meaning to see a repertory print on the big downtown screen and never quite get there, September is still open.
The corners residents still under-use
Half the appeal of living in Tarrytown is that the walkable radius includes things people drive across town to see. A short list of what's still open and quiet in August:
- The Contemporary Austin – Laguna Gloria. A working art museum on Lake Austin whose grounds are open for wandering. The walking paths themselves are the point.
- Reed Park. Six acres of lush grass, picnic tables, a swimming pool and a wading pool, and the fallback plan for Tuesdays when Deep Eddy is closed.
- Mayfield Park. Peacocks, koi ponds, gardens, and shade. Best before 10 a.m. in August.
- Lions Municipal Golf Course. The public course where Ben Crenshaw and Tom Kite cut their teeth, currently owned by the University of Texas and on the target list to sell, with an extensive public campaign by West Austin to keep the course as it is. The politics of Muny is its own long story. The tee sheet is still open.
If out-of-town guests land this month
A useful five-hour version of Tarrytown for someone who has never been:
Morning swim at Deep Eddy, walk over to Windsor Road for lunch, stop at Bésame for something cold on the way back, and end the afternoon on the Laguna Gloria grounds before the heat lifts.
Two things to remember if you're building this itinerary for guests. Skip it on a Tuesday. And parking at Deep Eddy can be tight, so consider biking the Town Lake Trail for easier access.
The through-line
What ties this all together is not that any one opening is transformative. It's that Tarrytown's small commercial footprint has quietly reset around the pool it has always been organized around. A new comfort-food restaurant on Windsor. A second dessert truck. A new tenant in Casis Village. A pool schedule that now takes Tuesdays off. If you have lived here for five years, none of those items alone changes your week. Read them together and August 2026 is the first summer in a while where the neighborhood's daily surface is meaningfully different from the one you remember.
That's usually how Tarrytown changes. Slowly, at the edges, and mostly on foot.
